Our Person-Centered Approach

The core philosophy that informs all our work is a "person-centered" approach.

Our treatment approach for clinical services is “patient-centered” – i.e., we treat whole people not just symptoms or conditions.  We understand our clients' presenting problems in the context of their overall lives, their life histories, and where they’ve arrived in the course of their lives.  And we understand that a client is not just a problem to be solved, but a person with strengths as well as problems, including strengths that can be recruited to solve some of those problems. In addition, we take a truly team-based approach to patient care, communicating and collaborating with caregiving staff and other healthcare providers as closely as needed to optimize overall treatment progress and resident quality of life. 

Age-related loss often initiates the end of a cherished era in a person's life, which may trigger anxiety, depression or other psychiatric symptoms.  But it need not mark the end of a person's purpose and meaning in life.  When the scope of treatment is too tightly focused on addressing specific symptoms, clients' strengths can be overlooked.  Taking a person-centered approach, we capitalize on clients' strengths, engaging them to marshal their inner resources to address age-related loss and other challenges.  By believing in and focusing upon their capacity to change, to learn and grow, despite their limitations, we reconnect clients with their sense of purpose and meaning in life - and their symptoms thereby diminish or resolve.

In a similar vein, our consulting approach when providing facility services is "worker-centered".  We truly partner with facility leaders and staff to offer useful training and development.  We start by consulting with leaders to understand organizational issues and the learning needs of employees.  This allows us to design customized workshops and other services to address those issues and needs.  Then, as we deliver, we solicit ongoing feedback from staff and adjust to them to "meet them where they’re at".  This allows us to foster a flexible learning experience, that supports staff while we challenge them to change and grow.
